사회는 늘 질서를 유지하기 위해 언어를 만들고, 규범을 세우며, 상징을 반복한다. 그러나 그 표면 아래에는 말로는 다 담을 수 없는 감정, 설명할 수 없는 욕망, 쉽게 다듬어지지 않는 개인의 내면이 흐르고 있다. 이번 전시는 사회라는 구조 속에서 개인이 마주하는 감정과 태도, 그리고 그 사이의 긴장을 탐구하고자 한다.

권효민 작가는 사회가 개인을 통제하고 개인이 그 질서에 순응하는 구조 속에서 발생하는 긴장과 균형에 주목한다. 공동체와 개인이라는 크고 작은 사회의 단위에 관심을 가져온 작가는 구슬, 프라모델, 패션벽지와 같이 특정한 시기의 유행하는 양식 등 다양한 집단의 상징과 기호를 수집한다. 이렇게 수집된 기호나 상징들은 불규칙하게 중첩하고 해체하고 또 다시 재배열되어 평면, 조각, 설치 매체를 통해 현실의 복합적인 장면을 시각화하여 나타낸다.

류은미 작가는 사람과 사람이 감정을 전달하는 언어 체계 그리고 그 소통방식에 대해 주목한다. 같은 단어와 문장에도 상황에 따라 다르게 느껴지는 미세한 감정의 차이는 때때로 그 진심이 왜곡 되거나 오해되는 과정을 마주하게 한다. 작가의 작업은 감정이 언어라는 틀을 벗어나 다양한 형태로 표출될 수 있도록 모스부호, 렌티큘러, 빛의 시그널, 음성의 파형 등 쉽게 읽히지 않는 매체를 택하여 즉각적인 이해보다는 관람자 개개인의 감각을 통해 감정을 마주하고 타인과 보다 더 깊이 있는 감정 교류를 나눌 수 있는 방식에 새로운 질문을 던진다.

언어와 상징, 감정과 욕망, 사회와 개인 사이에는 여전히 설명되지 않는 것들이 남아 있다. 권효민, 류은미 두 작가는 그 경계에서 태어나는 흔들림과 모호함, 그리고 서로를 이해하려는 끊임없는 시도를 작품으로 드러낸다. 표면 아래에서 움직이는 감정과 주체성의 파동을 따라가며, 우리 모두가 이 구조 속에서 어떻게 존재하고 있는지를 다시금 생각해 볼 수 있는 시간이 되기를 바란다.

Society constantly creates language, establishes norms, and repeats symbols to maintain order. Yet beneath that surface flow emotions too vast for words, inexplicable desires, and the untamed inner lives of individuals. This exhibition explores the emotions and attitudes individuals confront within society's structures, and the tensions that arise between them.

Kwon Hyomin focuses on the tension and equilibrium that emerge within structures where society controls individuals and individuals conform to that order. Having long been interested in the social units of community and the individual, large and small, the artist collects symbols and signs of various groups, such as beads, plastic models, and fashion wallpaper forms popular during specific periods. These collected signs and symbols are irregularly layered, deconstructed, and rearranged, visualizing complex scenes of reality through the mediums of painting, sculpture, and installation.

Artist Ryu Eun-mi focuses on the linguistic systems through which people convey emotions and their modes of communication. The subtle emotional nuances that make the same words and sentences feel different depending on context sometimes reveal how sincerity can be distorted or misunderstood. The artist's work poses new questions about ways to engage with emotion through each viewer's individual senses rather than immediate understanding. By choosing media that are not easily deciphered such as Morse code, lenticular images, light signals, and sound waveforms she allows emotion to express itself in diverse forms beyond the framework of language, enabling deeper emotional exchange with others.

Between language and symbol, emotion and desire, society and the individual, unexplained elements persist. Artists Kwon Hyomin and Ryu Eunmi reveal in their work the tremors and ambiguities born at these boundaries, along with the relentless attempts to understand one another. Following the waves of emotion and subjectivity moving beneath the surface, we hope this becomes a time to reconsider how we all exist within this structure.
